Colonel Pierre Philippe Denfert-Rochereau (1823-1878) was a French military hero in the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-1871: he successfully defended the town of Belfort against the Prussians for 103 days. He was subsequently elected as a deputy in the Assemblée nationale
