About this work
Description
This is an informal fast-paced production demonstrating the importance of fruit flies in scientific research. Many images of New York streets and city life are cut together at the beginning with images of fruit flies (drosophilia) appearing towards the end of this sequence of clips. The audio track has a montage of news clips describing the remarkable discoveries made by studying fruit flies; there are scientific images of fruit flies. A phial of fruit flies is taken on a journey through the streets of New York. Various residents of New York give ‘vox pops’; finding out whether they recognise the insect and whether they realise their value to scientific research. Finally, a group of young scientific researchers from Rockefeller University are interviewed individually and explain the experiments they’re carrying out using fruit flies.
