Description
Colour-enhanced, scanning electron micrograph of a cell nucleus surrounded by cytoplasm. The tissue has been frozen and fractured causing it to split along natural boundaries. The dots on the nuclear surface are nuclear pores, large protein complexes in the nuclear envelope through which molecules move in and out of the nucleus. Small molecules diffuse through the pores but large proteins and RNA are actively transported by the pore complex.
