    In 1904 the late Alderman Edward Eastwood gave to Hospital a piece of land adjoining the Hospital, on which was subsequ^jly erected a Nurses’ Home, thus setting free, for the accommodation of further patients, the whole of the top floor of the original buildings. An Ophthalmic Department was also inaugurated. The alterations and extensions were carried out in 1907 and 1908 and provided for an increase of 39 surgical and ophthalmic beds, a Nurses’ Home to accommodate all the Nursing Staff, an anaesthetic room, and a Mortuary, bringing up the total bed accommodation to 110. On 29th July, 1908, the Nurses’ Home was opened by the Duchess of. Devonshire. The Basil Ward of 20 beds, given by the late Mr. Charles Markham in memory of his brother, the late Sir Arthur Basil Markham, was opened on November 9th, 1916, making the total bed accommodation 150. In January, 1918, the RojM Patronage was bestowed upon the Hospital, the title being changed to “The Chesterfield and North Derby¬ shire Royal Hospital/’ The Orthopaedic and Electrical Department was opened early in 1919, the Nurses’ Dining Room being appropriated for this purpose, and the Board Room utilised for the Nurses’ Dining Room. In 1919 the late Aid. G. A. Eastwood gave to the Hospital Holywell House and grounds, on wdfich a new Out-Patient block wras erected, comprising Consulting rooms, Ophthalmic Examination room, Casualty room. Orthopaedic, Electrical and Massage rooms, Pathological Laboratory, X-Ray rooms, etc. Alterations were made to Holywell House, providing accommodation for 23 members of the Nursing Staff. A Laundry was also erected and opened in 1923, the cost of the alterations and extensions amounting to £50,029 16s. 8d. The old Out-Patient Department was adapted for the use of the Resident Medical Staff, which now numbers five, and considerable improvements were made in the old administrative block. In 1923 the late Mr. Charles Markham gave shares to the value of £10,000 for the purpose of providing additional beds for women and children, and the Staveley Ward was built over the Devonshire Ward, bringing the total bed accommodation for patients up to 190. The addition of this Ward necessitated further accommodation for the Nursing Staff, and an annexe was built to Holywell House containing 18 rooms. In 1926 an appeal was made hy the Mayor of Chesterfield for providing a Wireless Installation, and every adult bed is now fitted with headphones, the Children’s Ward having a Loud Speaker. In 1931, a New Block of two storeys was opened by the Duke of Devonshire, the capital cost being £22,035. It contains on the first floor a Ward of 31 beds, called the Murphy Ward, to commemorate the legacy of £10,000 bequeathed by the late Mr. Thomas Murphy. The ground floor comprises a new Ophthalmic Out-Patient Department, a complete Theatre Unit for the use of this Department and the Ear, Nose and Throat Department, and a Laboratory for the Pathological Department. Eighteen additional rooms for the Nursing and Domestic Staffs were added to Holywell House. 126 milligrammes of Radium and the necessary accessories were purchased and a building erected for the Department, the total cost being £2,135. An X-Ray Film Store was also built. The bed accommodation for patients is now 220. A Psychiatric Clinic for the treatment of nervous disorders was- opened in September, 1934.
