About this work

Description

After reviewing the history of the NHS, the programme examines its current restructuring and asks whether its values are declining. Does competition between NHS managers distract their attention from providing a service for patients? Would trusts compete with more benefit to patients if they were altogether freed from NHS constraints? Will the NHS eventually reduce its services to cover emergencies only? These and many other questions are discussed by Sir Duncan Nichol (NHS Chief Executive 1989-94), Roy Lilley (Chairman, Homewood NHS Trust), Niall Dickson (BBC Chief Social Affairs Correspondent) and many other contributors.
