Description

Documentary on Guinea Worm Disease. Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter introduces the film and recounts his efforts to eradicate the disease. The life-cycle of the Guinea Worm and its route into the human body is explained. Carter visits a village in Ghana, in which Guinea Worm has been eradicated. He then recounts his work with The Carter Center and discusses its health programme. Technical Advisors for The Carter Center Tara Brant and Steffen Kramer recount their first experiences of Sudan and discuss the importance of the centre's work in local Sudanese communities. The removal of a Guinea Worm from a young child is shown. Vice President of Health Programs, The Careter Center Dr. Donald R. Hopkins discusses the logistics of running a Guinea Worm Disease eradication campiagn. Carter explains how Guinea Worm transmits between water collection points and the villages. Technical Assistant Ghana Guinea Worm Eradication Program Robert Agoe Adjartey explains the complications associated with changing people's attitudes to sanitary water collection. Technical Advisor for The Carter Center Elizabeth Scott explains some initiatives devised by The Carter Center to raise awareness in local communities. Carter describes the invention of the pipe water filter. Technical Advisor David Stobbelaar is shown explaining the importance of the pipe water filter to people in one affected area of Sudan. Director, Guinea Worm Eradication Program Ernesto Ruiz-Tiben describes some other awarness initiatives devised by The Carter Center. The process for dosing water in affected areas with abate larvacide is explained. Technical Assistant, GWEP discusses the risk of crocodiles whilst measuring water pools for dosing. Director, GWEP Makoy Samuel Yibi Logora discusses the importance of community understanding and dissemination of information in the eradication of Guinea Worm.
