About this work

Description

The programme looks at the new pioneering heart sugery techniques being performed at The London Heart Hospital, by Prof Stanton Newman (UCL Medical School) and his team. Prof Newman has evidence that bypass open heart surgery can be the cause of mini-strokes which damage the brain, and that these new techniques, already standard practice in America, can reduce the complications. Featuring patients who have experienced changes in personality since their operations, and how they are being helped to cope. Includes images of open heart surgery, one operation where the heart is stopped, and another where the heart continues to beat.
