About this work

Description

Fascinating but eccentric two-part "meditation" on the relationship, or lack of relationship, between the post- Harveian "Western" medical view of the heart as merely a pump, and older, more universal religious, artistic and sentimental conceptions of the heart as the seat of the soul, the passions, etc., still reflected in many everyday figures of speech. Includes many stunning historical and allegorical images of the heart from mediaeval manuscripts and music-books, religious iconography, Oriental medical manuscripts, etc., besides which footage of modern openheart surgery seems almost dull and commonplace. Part 1 features interviews with a cardiologist (J. Hillman), a millionaire businessman and heart-attack victim, and an American psychologist who claims that there was "probably much less" heart disease before Harvey asserted that the heart was "merely" a pump. Part II includes interviews with a psychologist (Ginette Paris), a painter (Robert Mason) and a heart-surgeon (Tom Treasure).
