Description
Marie de' Medici and Louis XIII stand on the stern of a sailing ship. Louis holds the sceptre in one hand and the rudder of the ship in the other. The ship is rowed by four women representing virtues. The personification of France stands in the centre, holding the orb and a rayonné sword. In the sky, two stars representing the Dioscuri appear on the left, while two personifications of Fame blow a horn and a trumpet
From 1610 to 1617 Marie de Médici acted as regent for her son, King Louis XIII of France, after which he expelled her

La majorité du Roy Louis XIII. La reine donne au Roy Louis XIII le gouvernement du royaume, marqué par une barque à laquelle la force, la religion, la justice et la bonne foy donnent le mouvement. D'autres vertus ont le soin des voiles et mettent toutes ensemble la France en sureté. On voit d'un côté les étoiles Castor et Pollux presages des voyages heureux: et de l'autre sont deux renomméee qui publient la bonne conduite de la reine au maniement des affaires. Rubens pinxit ; I.B. Nattier delin. ; A. Trouvain sculpsit.
