    Dental Clinic. Prior to 5th July, 1948, Mr. Jackson held 5 Maternity and Child Welfare Dental Clinics. 30 patients had extractions under general anaesthesia (gas and oxygen). The patients were assessed to pay for artificial dentures (which were supplied by a private firm) in accordance with an income scale. Nine nursing or expectant mothers were fitted with dentures. When the National Health Service Act came into force on 5th July, 1948, any person requiring dental treatment could obtain it free of charge from any private dentist. Before 5th July, 1948, any child under five years of age suffering from eye defects could be referred to Mr. P. M. Wood, the Council’s Consultant, and 12 children were referred to him for consultation. After 5th July, 1948, children under five not attending school who required ophthalmic examination were referred to their own doctors to be dealt with under the National Health Service. U. V. L. Clinic. This was held twice weekly at the Medical Centre during ihe year. A Sollux Mercury Vapour Lamp was used. 39 child¬ ren not attending school made 651 treatment sessions.
