One of several films created as a result of the research work carried out by F. T. (Frederick Thomas) Graves between 1952 and 1986 at University College Hospital, Kings College Hospital and Staffordshire General Infirmary. F. T. Graves was the brother of John Graves (1923-1980) who set up the Graves Medical Audiovisual Library with his wife Valerie.

From accompanying notes: 'A sub-umblical incision is made in the skin so as to leave the umblicus intact and thereby save the child from being "different" from other children. The neck of the hernial sac is found and then this and the rest of the sac are dissected free from the surrounding tissues. - Defining the edges of the "hole" in the fibrous aponeurosis of the abdominal wall. - Closure of the peritoneal edges. - Closure of the "hole" in the abdominal wall with interrupted sutures.'
