About this work
Description
Box file containing items of ephemera in acid free sleeves. Includes leaflets for organisations raising funds to help people with the disease and a collection of about 250 'Christmas seals', 'Cinderella stamps' or charity stamps dating from 1919 to 1989. These are (non postage) stamps which were sold every Christmas to raise money for charities and would have been stuck onto Christmas card envelopes, making them look colourful and also spreading awareness of the disease and what was being done to combat it. They have much traditional Christmas imagery, such as the Madonna and child, Father Christmas, snow, pine trees, holly, stars, robins, candles, snowmen, presents etc. and come from around the world (United States, France, England, Finland, Portugal, South Africa, Auckland & Northland (New Zealand), Norway, Sweden, Netherlands, New Zealand, Germany, Canada, Rhodesia, Nyasaland, India, Argentina and Venezuela). The charities are often mentioned as well (Lutheran Sanatorium (Wheat Ridge, Colorado), Ex-Patients Tubercular Home (Denver), East Lancashire Tuberculosis Colony, American Lung Association, Servico de Luta Antituberculosa, Tuberculosis Association of India, National Tuberculosis and Respiratory Disease Association, Comité Nationale de Défense Contre la Tuberculose etc.), 'Death from pulmonary tuberculosis' (form : Medical officer of Health, Edinburgh, 1930s?), 'TB is curable' (NHS, 2007), TB Alert (treatment for TB, 2010?).
