About this work

Description

Skeleton from the lizard, Bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps). Bone is stained red with alizarin which forms precipitates upon binding calcium. Alizarin is used as a biological stain to study bone growth, osteoporosis and calcium deposition. Originally isolated from the root of the madder plant Rubia tinctorum, it is also used as a dye to colour fabric and textiles.
