Saint Pauls school. Engraved from a drawing by and in the possession of Mr John Baker. B. Howlet sculp ... Lettering continues: "This celebrated seminary of classical learning, was founded and endowed in the year 1512 by John Colet, D.D. Dean of St. Pauls, for the education of 153 children, who are gratuitously taught the Latin, Greek, and Hebrew, languages. He also appointed masters, a chaplain &c. under the government of the Worshipful Company of Mercers, of London. The original building was destroyed by the great Fire in 1666 and rebuilt soon after that event, in nearly the same form. In 1783, it was repaired and beautiful, and in 1823, it was taken down for the purpose of erecting a splendid structure on its site". Lettering on facade: "Schola catechizationis pueroru in Christi opt maximi fide et bonis literis"
