About this work
Description
A "Biedermeier" interior with framed silhouette portraits and a mirror on the wall. An old hunchbacked woman with a black cat on her hump sits at a table, looking at various playing cards including the ace of hearts. Opposite are three seated ladies and a younger, standing, lady (presumably the "Dorothy" mentioned in the verses), eager to hear the old woman's interpretation of the cards

Translation of the verses: How eagerly they listen, the ladies and my little Dorothy! A greyhaired one soon, and soon delight, one discerns in the ladies' features. Superstition lays fetters upon us, by which an old woman can lead us by the nose
