    that few who have been feized with it have furvived It* Virulence, was utterly unknown to me till within thefc ten or twelve Years; and in all Probability I had to this day remained without any adequate Notion of it, had it not been very fatal in a Family of great Character and Diftindtion. This unfortunate Event put me on having recourfe to Authors, to fee if I could poffibly trace any Footfteps of this Malignant Diforder in the Writings of any of our Phyfical Predeceffors; one or two of whom I found had made mention of it. Notwithstanding which, all Ideas of fuch a Sort of Diftemper lay buried in a per- fedt Oblivion for above a Century, till the above-hinted calamitous Incident excited them a frefh. From which time the Throat.of any Perfon of Rank or Age affec¬ ted with a Sorenefs was immediately termed a bad Throat, though it was conftantly relieved by the ufual Method of Cure, viz. Bleeding, gentle Phyfick, and common Gargling. This §ort of Sore-Throat generally accompanies a Fever of the Scarlet Kind, and continues till the Red- nefs of the Skin difappears.
