Visualising the human breath ("Sing"), Artwork

Artwork capturing song recorded on photographic film. Titled "Sing", this artwork was created to record the breath expelled by a patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who was singing, showing both its resilience and fragility. The patient's breath was recorded by breathing through a light source onto photographic film. This image forms a series of work which records the breath or song from patients with respiratory conditions in order to make visible the dynamics of the human breath. COPD refers to a group of lung diseases which include chronic bronchitis, emphysema and chronic obstructive airways disease. COPD is commonly caused by smoking, and less frequently by air pollution, dust, fumes and genetic disorders, which over time can all damage the lungs. "Singing for Breathing" and "Breathe Easy" groups support respiratory patients to learn new breathing techniques and relaxation skills.
