The total work consists of six volumes, which were available as two publications of three volumes each. The three volumes of Middle Eastern subjects are called The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt & Nubia, often referred to as "The Holy Land". The remaining three volumes are called Egypt & Nubia

David Roberts travelled in the Middle East and North Africa, particularly Egypt, from 1838 to 1839, producing numerous sketches. Roberts later worked these up into watercolours, which formed the basis for the series of 247 lithographs called The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt & Nubia, published between 1842 and 1849
