About this work

Description

The man pulling on another's lapels remarks 'The taters warnt skinn'd, the peel has nearly choaked me', to which he receives the reply 'That's the Irish fashion it's reckoned an amendment'. Another seated man complains 'there don't seem to be enough lambs head in it or it would be more palatable', while another standing at the back holding a fork comments 'This will very nearly settle our hash its so scalding hot'. The soup in the centre of the table is labelled 'Irish stew a la norman(die)'

On the Prime Minister Robert Peel's dealings with the Irish over the Corn Law Bill. Peel eventually repealed the bill early in 1846 following a wet summer of 1845 and consequently bad harvest. The reference to the 'lambs head' is, according to other prints on the same subject, an allusion to the Irish coercion bill
