The Royal Botanic Society was established by Royal Charter in 1839, "for the promotion of botany in all its branches, and its application to medicine, arts, and manufactures, and also for the formation of extensive botanical and ornamental gardens within the immediate vicinity of the metropolis." --Nature, 2753 Vol. 110, August 1922, page 185
Copy of plan by Henry Laxton, Surveyor to the R.B.S. of London. This plan was never realised, the design used was by Robert Marnock.
