Description
Bible. N.T. Matthew 26.36-46; Mark 14.32-42; Luke 22.39-46. It is uncertain which particular biblical narrative is intended, although the supporting angel relates the image to the scene of doubt in the garden of Gethsemane. There he cries to God to "take this cup away from me". The ghostly figures behind Christ and the angel are the holy women. Soldiers with torches approach in the distance. Two groups of cherubs hold up the cross at the base and the top. The others tearfully congregate around a reed cross, a crown of thorns, nails, a spanner, a bell, the inscription above the cross, the sudarium, two lances (one bearing the sponge with the vinegar), a ladder and a spilled bag of coins. A crowing cock stands on the branch of a tree behind them
