About this work
Description
This recording is of interviews with former colleagues and pupils of pioneering cardiologist, Sir Thomas Lewis. The interviews were conducted by Dr. Arthur Hollman in preparation for his biography on Lewis: 'Sir Thomas Lewis: pioneer cardiologist and clinical scientist', London; New York: Springer, c1996. Hollman, a cardiologist who worked with Lewis in 1943, gives a lengthy introduction to life as a student under Lewis. Dr. Joan Stokes, interviewed on 25 July 1974, remenisces about being Lewis' student at University College Hospital, 1937-1945. Sir John McMichael, Wellcome Trustee and former Professor of Medicine at Hammersmith Hospital, is interviewed 31 July 1974 [the beginning of his interview is missing but he is re-introduced later on in the recording]. He was a student of Lewis 1922-27 and worked with Lewis 1934-1943 and provides much context to Lewis' work. Dame Albertine Winner [the beginning of the recording is missing] provides much information about the personal aspects of Lewis' life, such as his relationship with his wife and his passion for bird photography, and how it was being a student of Lewis 1933-1941. Sir Alan Drury, interviewed 22 August 1974, first worked with Lewis in 1916 at Hampstead Military Hospital then again at UCH 1920-1925; he reads out his reminisces about those and later years from a written document.
