The Operating Department Assistant (ODA) is a little-publicised member of the operating theatre team. ODA's assist at all levels of surgery, yet they are unregistered and, with no central control, there is nothing to stop a minority of bad ODA's from working. Public Eye investigates some abuses carried out by these assistants, including the illegal performance of routine surgery, and calls for legislation to make registration obligatory.
