    THE PRACTICAL DETAILS OF CATARACT EXTRACTION CHAPTER I OPERABLE CATARACT Definitions—Progressive Cataracts—Stages and Varieties—Lique- fying Cataracts — Shrinking Cataracts — Hypersclerosis — Secondary and Traumatic Cataracts—Summary—Duration— Operability—Volume of Cataractous Lenses. The term ‘cataract’ denotes opacity of the crystalline lens. Its nature and varieties will be entered into here only so far as appears necessary from their bearing on treatment. The term ‘ capsular cataract ’ never indicates loss of transparency of the true capsule of the lens, but is applied to abnormal proliferations of the lens-cells which normally line only the anterior capsule, but which in some cataractous lenses may extend around over the whole of the posterior capsule also. The new forma- tions are within the true capsule, but are inseparable from it. ‘ After-cataract ’—also known as ‘ secondary cataract,’ thus unnecessarily introducing confusion with cataract secondary to other diseases of the eye—is the membranous opacity which frequently interferes with vision after removal of the lens. It may be capsular cataract in the above sense; the name is also less correctly applied to deposit on the front of the capsule— i.e.^ strictly speaking, / pupillary membrane.’ The cataract may be partial, affecting only portions of
