Description
Acu-moxa point chart, showing the hernia (shanqi) point, from Chuanwu lingji lu (Record of Sovereign Teachings), by Zhang Youheng, a treatise on acu-moxa in two volumes. This work survives only in a manuscript draft, completed in 1869 (8th year of the Tongzhi reign period of the Qing dynasty). It is illustrated with 84 charts, finely executed in colour.
The text states: To locate the hernia point, measure the width of the patient's mouth from corner to corner, and multiply this measurement by three. Now draw a square with sides of this length, the upper side level with the navel. The two lower corners of the square correspond to the hernia point. To treat hernia, four moxibustions are performed at the hernia point with moxa cones the size of a grain of millet. If the hernia is on the left, moxibustion is carried out on the right hernia point; if it is on the right, moxibustion is carried out on the left hernia point; if there are hernias on both sides, both points are moxibusted.
