About this work

Also known as

Formerly known as "War Machine"

Description

Dirt and Disorder: The growing importance of cleanliness is a significant factor in the rise of Western civilization. The film traces the development of sewage systems, with special reference to Haussmann's Paris sewers, electricity and nuclear power. It examines the hopes and fears bound up with these developments, technology's role in urban renewal and the way in which the post-war vision of redevelopment backfired to produce the U.S. urban riots of the 1960s and a legacy of hazardous waste material. War Machine: Examines the rise of modern military technology, how it has changed our vision of war and the effects of war on combattants and non-combattants. Contributors include Mary Kaldor, John Keegan and Daniel Pick.
