About this work

Description

An ex-voto painting, offering thanks to the Virgin for the successful recovery of the person on whose behalf it is offered. The woman is praying to the Virgin and Christ Child, both of whom wear golden crowns. They appear to be in the form of the Madonna del Parto, a sculpture by Sansovino in the church of Sant'Agostino in Rome. Above them are suspended censers or oil lamps. The people in the fire may be souls of sinners in purgatory.
