About this work

Description

Last in a three-part series about some of the life and death decisions that have to be faced by doctors and patients. This part follows the dilemmas faced by parents of children born extremely prematurely. We meet Stuart and Maxine James whose first son was born 4 months early and who has cerebral palsy and profound deafness. Now they are faced with the possible premature arrival of their second child. We follow their story as this possibility becomes a reality and the new baby, another boy, fights for his tiny life. Detailed footage of his birth is shown. We also follow the story of Helen and Pete Carter. Helen has developed pre-eclampsia and her daughter, Hannah, has to be delivered by emergency caesarean 13 weeks early. The programme provides behind the scenes access to the Neo-natal units of one of the UK's leading hospitals, Guy's and St Thomas's Hospital, giving the viewer insight into the life and death dilemmas of patients and doctors at the frontiers of medical technology.
