About this work

Description

"People, especially those who work for the mass media, are always giving their opinion on the progress of the care in the community programme. The programme was introduced to resettle psychiatric patients in the outside world when the old Victorian hospitals were closed down. There are seldom any attempts by the press to differentiate between the care in the community patient discharged from the local psychiatric unit, and the criminally insane patient who is discharged into the community from a secure unit or one of the special hospitals such as Broadmoor or Rampton. When the criminally insane patient re-offends as sometimes happens, the mass media waste no time in publicly calling into question the entire care in the community programme though the problem of serious crime has no more to do with the long term mentally ill than it does with anyone else living in the community. In this booklet I hope to show part of the world as it appears to a care in the community patient"--introduction
