About this work

Description

Manuscript recipe book of Anna-Maria Meysey, containing culinary, domestic and medical receipts.

The volume is written in one hand and compiles family recipes for baked goods, meat, medical remedies and domestic chores including cures for rheumatism and inflamed eyes, recipes for cakes and meat stews and how to wash silk stockings. The book attributes these recipes to various family and friends, including Mrs Wodhull of Thenford (providing recipes for Beef Tea, Lemonade, Orangeade, 'Doctor Lowers Cholic Tincture', and 'For cleaning mahogany tables', among others), Mrs Meysey of Worcester ('To pickle Mangoes'), Sister Turton ('Trentham Cheese' and 'To make Tar Water'), Aunt Meysey Shakenhurst ('To bottle gooseberry's', and 'To make puff Past') and E. Turton (Tooth Powder). In several instances notes that the recipe is copied from an outside source e.g. Thomson Family Herbal by Bewick.

The volume also features an index of recipes towards the end of the volume.
