Biographical note

No. 7 is entered in Thorndike's Catalogue of Incipits Col. 267 Anonymous, or doubtfully assigned to Constantinus Africanus or Galen. No. 8 is in Col. 462 of the Catalogue and is there assigned to 'Arnoldus de Villanova?', though the entry reads 'Omni tempore si necessitas'. No. 11 This has been tentatively identified as a transaltion and abridgement of the first half of Avenzoar's 'Kitäb el Ardià as described by Colin in 'Avenzoar: sa vie et ses oeuvres' Paris. 1911, pp. 145-153. No Latin translation of this work seems to be recorded, though Col. 479 of Thorndike'sCatalogue contains an entry referring to 'Panis triticea' which appears to agree with our MS., Fol. 182, col. 1, line 17. It is to be noted that the 'De pestilentia' of Johannes Jacobi follows immediately upon the last section of Avenzoar's work 'De vomitu', and that in the Colophon (fol. 203v) the whole tract is entitiled 'Libellus de regimine sanitatis et de pestilentia'. No. 12 For Jacobi's work, of. Sudhoff's Archiv für Geschichte der Medizin XI. pp. 143, 162; XVII pp. 16-32, 251-256. No. 13 Of these the 'Remedium contra pestilentiam' is recorded in Sudhoff. op. cit. VII, p. 63; 'Aliud remedium contra pestilentiam' (fol. 205) as by Jacobus de Ulma, in Sudhoff. op. cit. IV, p. 413; and the entry 'Für den lauf der drües' (fol. 206) in Sudhoff. op. cit. XIV, p. 147. No. 14 Entered in Thorndike, op. cit., Col. 717, as anonymous. No. 16 Th incomplete entry on fol. 217v, col. 2 is found in Thorndike, op. cit. Col. 300, as anonymous. The fragments of end-papers at the beginning and end appear to be part of a vellum leaf of a 13th century. MS. on Latin grammar. On f. 1r is written in a late fifteenth-century hand ': 'Receptum doctor Hugo spaniol In paryss optimum contra pestilencias'.
