The other possible adhesions that have been observed are as follows : Adhesion of the cecum with a loop of the small intestine in the right hypochondriac region, of the cecum with the sigmoid flexure, of the cecum with the abdominal wall, adhesions between the intestine and mesentery, between mesentery and mesentery, between individual loops of the small intestine, between the intestine and the uterus, ovaries, bladder; adhesions .between any of the female generative organs and the parietal peritoneum of the pelvis ; adhesions be- tween the limbs or ring of an external hernia on the one hand, and the mesentery, intestine, and parietal peritoneum on the other hand. Secondly, omental or mesenteric bands. These owe their origin to peritonitis, issuing either from the uterus and its adnexa, the ap- pendix, or the biliary apparatus. They are most frequently the result of tuberculous peritonitis, however. The entire mesentery may retract, drawing some of the intestinal loops posteriorly as far as the vertebral column. Mesenteric bands are usually thicker and longer than the isolated peritonitic bands. They are more fre- quently of a round shape, and may occur singly or in multiples. The entire omentum may be adherent and form one solid conglom- eration, attached to the abdominal wall, intestine, or a pelvic organ ; the base of this conglomerate spreads out toward the transverse colon. Mesenteric as well as isolated peritonitic adhesions may give rise to two different incarcerations or strangulations in different parts of the abdominal cavity. There are in the peritoneal cavity a number of freely movable structures—for instance, the vermiform process, the Fallopian tubes, Meckles’ diverticula or omphalomesenteric remains, and epiploic growths which are pouch-like fatty projections of the peritoneum of the large intestine, usually spoken of as appendices cpiploicce. Any of these structures may be so fixed that its free end becomes ad- herent to the mesentery, intestine, or abdominal wall. It has been observed that the vermiform appendix was attached to the mesenteiy of the ileum or cecum in such a way as to form a tight string with two firm points of insertion.
