Tuberculosis.—Table 6 deals, as in previous years, with the most fatal of our infectious diseases, tuberculosis. As will be noticed from table I, the death-rate from consumption, the most easily recognised as well as the most fatal form of tuberculosis, has been of late steadily on the decline. In the five years 1885-89, the rate was 170. For the five years 1896-1900, it was l'43. The whole subject of tuberculosis and the variations in districts (intercepts) of the rates from phthisis in the five earlier and five later years of the decade was very fully treated in the report for 1899 (fasciculus II.). I hope to use the figures obtained for the special tables in that report again correcting the rates, when the results of the recent census are at our command.
