    motion, and the apprehension of MSDE , this enjoyment for ever. The structure of the knee-joint is more complicated, than that of any other arti- culation in the body. Besides the capsu- lar and lateral ligaments, which it has, in common with the majority of other joints, it is also furnished with particular liga- ments, named the crucial ones, and with interarticular semilunar cartilages. The complication of its structure may also scem to the contemplative pathologist a reason, why its diseases should not only be more frequent, but, at thesame time, more obstinate, and difficult of cure, than those of other joints. The articular surfaces of the knee, and the cavity of its capsular li- gament, are also much larger, than those of any other articulation. The hip-joint is greatly protected by its deep situation from blows, and other species of external violence; from the bad effects of sudden vicissitudes of tempera- ture; and from the operation of outward
