Description

Commonplace book, containing pharmaceutical recipes, pen and pencil sketches, extracts, verse and other commonplaces, compiled from about 1820 onwards by two different authors, James Bridgwater, surgeon of Oswestry, and E V Mainwaring. There are various illustrations, including (ff. 101-102) anatomical sketches of the foot and leg(ff. 104-108) surgical procedure for amputation above the knee, and (ff. 112-113) muscles of the back and head. There are also numerous non-medical illustrations, including birds, flowers and caricatures.

Biographical note

Mainwaring seems to have inherited the volume from Bridgwater, about whom nothing further is known. The former became MRCS in 1827 and took his MD at Glasgow in 1842. He may have served in the Indian Medical Service for a period between these two dates. He subsequently practised at Bournemouth.
