About this work
Description
This documentary looks at the rise in weight of newborn babies in the UK. In 1992 Nicola Carr gave birth to a 15lb boy, Guy, who remains the largest baby to be born in the UK. However Nicola wasn't obese and Guy soon slimmed down after birth to become a normal-sized boy. This is not the case with babies being born at the moment - most have obese mothers and go on to become obese toddlers. We meet a variety of mothers who have given birth to large babies - most of whom are obese. And we look at the threat to mothers during labour when the baby about to be born is so large; new statistics show that 50% of maternal deaths occur in obese women. Professor Neil Stickland from the Royal College of Veterinarians has been conduction a study on pregnant rats and concludes that eating junk food while pregnant produces off-spring that are much larger and have a taste for the same kind of food as well as an insatiable appetite. The programme includes quite detailed footage of childbirth.
