The painter was born in London, brought up in Riga, and studied painting with Heinrich Knirr at the Atelier Knirr in Munich. He returned to England in 1918. In 1934 he was commissioned by Charles Pannett to depict Pannett's operations at St Mary's Hospital London: at least seven drawings were produced, of which two are in the Wellcome Library, London. They were worked up in gouache in 1937
