About this work

Description

An elderly man with a white beard and a fur-trimmed hat is seated, centre, directed towards a table, left, on which he rests a large book. On the table are a globe (apparently a celestial globe) and some drug jars. The suggestion is that he is a savant or would-be savant with an interest in medicine and astral sciences. There are six drug jars on the left and four on the right. The drug jars are similar to those in a painting sold as by Heemskerck at Sotheby's London (Olympia) on 6 July 2004, lot 483, signed EHK, in which there are six on the left and three on the right
