About this work

Description

This programme looks at one day in our planet's obsession with the cigarette - we hear from people across the globe about their smoking habits. Quitting guru Allen Carr talks about how he quit smoking 20 years ago and gives a few tips for smokers who want to quit. Jon Ronson and David Hockney defend the pleasures of nicotine. Jed Rose, inventor of the nicotine patch, invites us to watch a test in which someone smokes a radioactive cigarette in an MRI scanner so we can watch the way the nicotine disperses into the body. Sir Richard Peto, who is conducting the longest health study in the history of science by following smokers over many years, describes his work and shows the case files of over 30 000 subjects in his study who have died from smoking-related illnesses. We also meet Chris Proctor and watch his attempts to make a healthy cigarette. Stephen Westaby, heart surgeon, talks us through just some of the negative affects smoking has on the body and we see him operate on a smoking man's heart. Jeffrey Wigand who went against the tobacco industry in the US, and about whom the film 'The Insider' was made, tells his story. And Linda Ferry, an anti-smoking Evangelist who has been running quitting smoking camps for years talks about her discovery of how the drug Zyban can double your chances of quitting.
