Joseph Hume (1777-1855) attacked the Irish orangemen or the Orange society which Ernest Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, their Grand Master had revived. Cumberland was accused of exploiting his position to pose as the defender of protestantism, and to affect the loyalty of the army
