About this work

Description

Souvenir postcard showing Martha standing with her right arm on the arm of an upholstered, carved wooden chair. She is wearing a full length (silk?) dress with short, puffed sleeves. The text is in handwriting but has been printed as part of the whole rather than overprinted to look like actual writing. Her surname is unclear but is most likely Ullrich. A midget Martha Ullrich toured with Franzi Fröhlich in Germany in 1902. The card would probably have been sold as a souvenir at places where she was exhibited as part of a freak or variety show.
