Robber fly (Asilidae)

Photomacrograph of the head of a robber fly (Asilidae). Robber flies are also called assassin flies and are found around the world often in dry, sunny habitats. They are opportunistic predators and the adults feed on a variety of other arthropods such as wasps, bees, dragonflies, grasshoppers, other flies, and some spiders. Two prominent compound eyes (for accurate perception of movement) are visible here. They can inflict painful bites on humans if provoked. Width of image is 6 mm.
