    School into being and by reducing the hours of work of the entire Nursing Staff at the first possible moment. Our Student Nurses’ Unit is actively engaged in all kinds of educational and social pursuits. In October we had our first Speech-making Contest and were honoured by having as the judges Miss H. K. Sheldon, Alderman J. Burgoyne and Mr. H. I. Godfrey, who showed great interest in the contest and were most encouraging in their comments. Miss Margaret Cobane (second year Student Nurse) gained the First Prize with what the judges termed “ an outstandingly good speech.” Another honour came to the Unit when Miss Winifred E. Byers-Jones (third year Student Nurse) was selected by inter-hospital ballot to become the Eastern Area Representative of the voluntary hospitals on the Student Nurses’ Association Central Representative Council of the Royal College of Nursing. In doing so. Miss Byers-Jones represents the students of over forty hospitals and she and other of our students have attended meetings in various parts of the country. The Nurses’ Social Club, among its other outdoor and indoor recrea¬ tions, had a most successful Arts and Crafts Exhibition—-the judge being Miss D. Williams, who was Honorary Secretary of the Hertfordshire Arts and Crafts Society. She was most helpful in her criticisms and the evening was much enjoyed. I think the high-light of the year, as far as the Social Club was concerned, was the entertainment of some of the Officers and Sub-Mariners of H.M.
