Biographical note
The Association of Community Health Councils for England and Wales (ACHCEW) was established under provisions in the National Health Service (Reorganisation) Act 1977. It's purpose was to provide a forum for member Community Health Councils (CHCs), to provide information and advisory services to these CHCs and to represent the user of health services at a national level. CHCs were not obliged to be members, but most were.
The ACHCEW office carried out a number of functions, such as providing an information service to CHCs, issuing briefing documents, providing training and advice, and providing a direct link with branches of government, professional bodies, and national voluntary organisations.
The Association of Community Health Councils for England and Wales was abolished on 1 December 2003, along with all Community Health Councils.
