About this work

Description

In reverse to the painting described by Tassi (cited by Gironi, loc. cit.) as on the high altar of the church of Santa Marta (Saint Margaret) in Bergamo. Tassi identified the saint on the right of the painting (left of the engraving) as Saint Dominic (the convent attached to the church of Saint Marta was Dominican), and the robed saint next to Saint Catherine as Saint Mary Magdalene ("Santa Maria Maddalena, nobilmente vestita ed in grazioso atteggiamento"), the latter perhaps not convincingly. Gironi adds"Questa dipintura è sulla tela: proviene dalla soppressa chiesa di Santa Marta di Bergamo ed ha metri 3.90 di altezza e metri 2.55 di larghezza." The first volume of Michele Bisi's publication advertised the artistic treasures of the Napoleonic "Kingdom of Italy" (1805-1814) held in its capital city, Milan
