This research has been carried out in the Marcus Beck Laboratory of the Royal Society of Medicine under the directorship of Sir Ronald Ross, K.C.B., F.R.S. In this paper it is intended to confine the attention to the spirochsetes which occur in the mouth and intestines of man and some of the lower animals in health, and in certain patho- logical conditions. When we consider the important part played by Spirochsctae and Treponeinata in the production of serious diseases in animals and man all over the world, in this country and in the tropics, it seems difficult to realize that the commoner spirochetes of the human mouth and alimentary canal are almost entirely neglected by the research students and medical men in this country.
