About this work

Description

Another work by Stradanus, the fresco in the Studiolo of Duke Francesco in the Palazzo Vecchio, Florence, shows a medical preparation of elixirs from the amalgamation of metals. The chemical vessels are similar to this engraving, which was probably a popular version of Stradanus' former design. In the centre is a furnace with a waterbath for graduated distillation, and on the right a pressing machine for producing conical crucibles. A scholar sits on the right, while an artisan behind him points out something in his book
