About this work
Description
"The Augustinian priory of St Mary Merton (Surrey) was founded on its present site in 1117 by Gilbert, Sheriff of Surrey. Excavations between 1976 and 1990 uncovered much of the medieval priory which lay c. 11.3km to the south-west of London on the banks of the River Wandle. Merton was one of the most influential of all the English houses of regular canons; during the 13th century Merton was favoured by Henry III, who visited frequently."--BOOK JACKET.
