9 autograph letters by Somerville, signed; correspondents include Lady Charlotte Murchison (née Hugonin) (d.1869), wife of the geographer Sir Roderick Impey Murchison (1792-1871) (no. 2), the Italian agronomist Marchese Cosimo Ridolfi (1794-1864) attempting to mobilise opposition to vivisection carried out by the physiologist Moritz Schiff (1823-1896) (no. 4), the diplomat Stratford Canning, Viscount Stratford de Redcliffe (1786-1880) (no. 8), and Viscountess Stratford de Redcliffe (Elizabeth Charlotte Canning, née Alexander) (no. 3). Chiefly material held formerly in the Western Manuscripts Department's Autograph Letters Sequence.
