They are listening to news of the capture of Acre in Palestine in November 1840 by Austrian, British and Ottoman troops as part of their intervention against the campaign by Muhammad Ali Pasha, the governor of Egypt, to expand his area of government into parts of the Ottoman empire. On the left a man is being shaved by a barber
